Acne (Acne vulgaris). Diagnostics and treatment

Acne is one of the widest-spread skin diseases, which most often affects teenagers but should not be ruled out at any age. There are many forms of acne vulgaris, and the dermatologist will prescribe the treatment after the evaluation of the disease picture.

What are the causes of acne?

There are many causes predetermining the occurrence of acne. The 4 main factors that precondition the occurrence of acne vulgaris include the following:

      • Increase secretion of sebaceous glands
      • Obstruction of the sebaceous gland and upper part of the hair follicle
      • Propionibacterium acnes infection
      • Skin irritation

In which parts of the body do acne vulgaris appear?

The disposition of acne vulgaris is determined by the localisation of sebaceous glands. Most often, rash appears in the places of the closest location of sebaceous glands including the areas of the neck, cheeks, chin, chest as well as in the upper part of the back.

      Treatment of acne vulgaris

Treatment of acne vulgaris already at the early stage is necessary in order to prevent the formation of scars. The treatment method depends on the form of acne. In common, antibiotic treatment is applied during exacerbation of acne. However, antibiotics cannot be taken for a long time because otherwise bacteria develop resistance to the medicines.
This is why various ointments that liquate the plugs of sebaceous glands and dehumidify the skin are prescribed for supportive treatment.

Sometimes, in severe cases of acne vulgaris, oral synthetic retinoids Roaccutane are prescribed, which decrease the secretion of sebaceous glands. Such treatment requires constant control by the dermatologist due to possible heavy undesirable manifestations.

Treatment of acne using light-emitting diodes (LED)

Acne is cured successfully with the use of light-emitting diodes. This treatment method provides an alternative to medical therapy because the remission of the disease can be achieved by affecting bacteria, sebaceous glands, and irritation processes with various forms of light.

The light emitted by blue and red diode sources and used for the treatment of acne vulgaris is characterised by the action killing the bacteria of acne vulgaris (Propionibacterium acnes) and mitigating irritation. Combined blue and red light treatment allows the most efficient healing of acne rash.

Unlike in case of medical therapy, this method ensures long-term remission of the disease, i.e. no use of any other medicines is required after the light procedure course is completed, and rash does not reappear for a long time.
